Perry County PA Day Trip

Summer is coming to an end, so we try to take advantage of the good weather as much as we can.  Perry County PA has a lot of outdoor attractions, so we decided to check some of them out.

Perry County PA has numerous covered bridges, some of which are still in use today.  Book’s Covered Bridge was replaced by this replica in 2003.  The original was built in 1884.

After checking out some of these beautiful covered bridges, we decided to take a hike.  We have been hiking the Appalachian Trail in sections for awhile now, so we decided to hike a section in Perry County.

Ashley spotted this mosaic of bottle caps at the parking area for the Appalachian Trail.

For this hike, we teamed up with our good friend Bill.  Having two cars available allows us to hike in one direction without having to double back toward our car.  Ashley and I parked our car at the AT parking area, then rode to the top of Millers Gap with Bill where we started our hike.  Most of this hike was located inside of State Game Lands 170.

The woods are filled with so much life in the summer.  All of the different shades of green never cease to amaze me.

It’s amazing to see how sunlight can find its way to the forest floor.
Bill decided to add this rock to this beautiful old tree.

The variety of mushrooms that can be found is absolutely amazing.  We are definitely going to purchase a field guide for mushrooms in the near future!

These mushrooms looked gross!
Some type of fresh water spring.

After an hour or so hiking in the woods, we emerged into some beautiful fields.

These Appalachian Trail signs are so cool!  Hope to see some more of these pop up in Perry County soon!
